Things I Loved This Month: January 2020

I cannot believe January is already almost over! This month went by surprisingly quickly compared to in 2019. Last year January literally felt like it was 3 months long. This year, maybe because it’s been really busy at work and there’s been a ton going on in my personal life, it feels shorter but I’m not complaining over here. A few weeks ago, I said I wanted to hold onto the winter weather for a little bit longer (because I just bought a bunch of sweaters), but all of a sudden in the last week of January I’m feeling ready for spring. I’m trying not to wish the winter away, but the spring fever is definitely creeping in for me. Anyway, here’s some of my favorite things this month.

Teller’s American Chophouse – Islip, NY

This is the restaurant that Andrew and I went to for our anniversary dinner and holy cow it was delicious. The manager that night asked if we were celebrating anything special and then made sure our dessert had “Happy Anniversary” written onto the plates which was a really special touch. Our server was attentive and gave us such a good experience also. It was those small details that made us say that we’d love to go back. The food was also insanely good too. We happened to go during restaurant week so they had a price fixed menu option that we decided to do with a wine pairing and everything was so so good. I got lobster bisque as my starter and Andrew got some kind of bacon dish to start. We both got the Teller’s Delmonico which was the most delicious steak I’ve ever had and it came with truffle butter sauce and crispy fried onions and we added on a side of asparagus. For dessert we had cheesecake and a chocolate brownie with bourbon ice cream. Everything was amazing and I would highly recommend!

Serafina – New York, NY

This is the restaurant I went to for my birthday in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan and it was another hit for me! The inside of the restaurant is a gorgeous rustic Italian feel with exposed brick, dark wood and dim lighting for a really romantic atmosphere. They had lots of pasta dishes to choose from, some meat and fish entrees, tons of apps/soup/salad and dessert options. I got the eggplant parm because they didn’t actually have chicken parm on the menu which I have to say was disappointing but it was good so I don’t mind too much. Andrew got gnocchi with cherry tomatoes and that was absolutely delicious. I think I’d get that next time I go! Another thing I liked was that it was reasonably priced for a nice restaurant in Manhattan. I’m looking forward to going back and I would definitely recommend checking this one out!

& Other Stories

Earlier this month, I bought a scary amount of sweaters from & Other Stories which is a store I’ve had my eye on for a while. I always thought they made such beautiful pieces, but could never really afford to pay the price for the quality. I took the plunge and ordered a few sweaters that I felt were closet staples that I was missing and was so pleasantly surprised at how much I love them! The material on all the sweaters is thick and warm because most of the ones I ordered are made of a wool/alpaca blend. The colors are beautiful and they fit really well. They do have to be carefully cared for so as not to upset the fibers of the material but I think it’s worth it. These are the kind of quality items that I’ll be able to wear for years and years to come.

Smashbox Photo Finish Radiance Primer

This is an item that I rediscovered recently and I am so happy that I did. One thing I noticed since the beginning of this month is that my makeup looks really powdery and dry and I’m thinking it’s because I had been using a matte primer because I have naturally oily skin. Apparently that was too matte because my makeup has been looking extremely cakey this month and I hate it. I decided to try out just using this primer from Smashbox and it helped a ton! My skin looks glowy under my makeup, but it still lasts most of the day even with my (apparently not so) oily skin.

Boomerang for Google Chrome

This one is not really as interesting as the rest but it’s been a tool that has come in really handy over the last few months. Boomerang is a plug-in that you can add onto Google Chrome (completely free) and it gives you some extra tools for your Google Emails. I, personally, love to use it for the Delay Send option which allows you to type out an email and delay the send time for whatever time you want. I like to use this when I’m sending an email late at night and I want it to arrive in the person’s inbox in the early morning. Instead of getting up and hitting send at 8:00 am, I can hit send at 11:00 pm the night before and set the time of delivery for 8:00 am. It’s a huge lifesaver because I don’t like interfering with someone’s personal time at home. I’m a huge advocate for work life balance and I don’t want someone to feel pressured to respond to my email when they’re not working.

How To Style One Blazer Four Ways

I found this really cute blazer at Mango recently on sale (!!!) and got it partially for work, partially because I had always wanted to try out styling a brown corduroy blazer. Since everyone seems to really like my posts where I style one item four ways, I thought this would be the perfect piece to try it out with. It’s sort of a classic item, but sort of not so I thought it would be fun to see what other ways I can style it this season. I’ll link as many items as I can below and please don’t forget to subscribe to my blog and follow me on Instagram @karenmauritzenn!

Outfit #1

One of my favorite ways to style the color brown is with the color white and I thought this blazer was the perfect addition to this outfit. The slouchy-ness of the jeans and the tank are a perfect contrast to the structure of the blazer. Paired with some medium brown accessories it’s such an great outfit because it has volume, color, and texture to keep things interesting! The blazer that I’m wearing throughout this post is linked here for you. My jeans sold out during the Zara sale a few weeks ago, but my tank from Old Navy, shoes from Target and belt from Urban Outfitters are all still available!

Blazer: Mango / Top: Old Navy / Pants: Zara / Belt: Urban Outfitters / Shoes: Target

Outfit #2

This is actually the outfit I had in mind when I bought this blazer. I bought this to wear for work because sometimes I have to wear more than just jeans and a sweater! I found these brown plaid trousers at Target and thought they were so cool but I knew they needed a very specific kind of blazer to go with it. I was sort of at a lost until I saw this one and thought they would complement each other really well! I just added a white turtleneck from Target underneath, but this would look great with a cami or a button down or even a t-shirt under too. I love a monochromatic look so of course I had to pair some brown heels from Steve Madden (similar) with it also!

Blazer: Mango / Top & Pants: Target / Shoes: Steve Madden

Outfit #3

Sometimes brown and black together can look a little bit funky but I think this works so well. Wearing an all black base in your outfit can actually make the brown item pop a bit more than if you featured multiple colors in the outfit. I’m just wearing a plain black long sleeve t-shirt from Target, my favorite washed black mom jeans from Topshop and my black Naturalizer heels! This outfit is insanely comfy, but super chic to wear for work or for drinks afterward!

Blazer: Mango / Top: Target / Jeans: Topshop / Shoes: Naturalizer

Outfit #4

This one is probably a little bit funky, but I love the idea of putting really rich colors together. This brown blazer is a very rich brown and I think it would pair so well with this bright bubblegum pink sweater from Something Navy (similar) and these mid wash ankle jeans from Abercrombie (similar). I know everyone is begging for the dad sneaker trend to be done with this year, but apparently I’m just getting started with it. I’m pairing my Fila Disruptor sneakers with this for a really easy cool girl outfit.

Blazer: Mango / Sweater: Something Navy / Jeans: Abercrombie / Shoes: Fila

What I Wore This Week: 1/20/20 – 1/25/20

I had a crazy busy week last week so now we’re back to a regular weekly outfit recap post. It was nice having a little break, but I missed sharing my outfits every day! This week is a pretty exciting week because it’s my birthday and also my anniversary so there’s exciting things going on I think. We also got some real winter weather this week (like below freezing weather), so it’ll be fun to style some outfits for that! Keep on reading to see what I wore, what I did, and how I felt this week. Also make sure to follow me on Instagram to see these outfits in real time on my stories @karenmauritzenn. Everything is linked in the captions for you to shop on your own also!

Monday

Today is my first day back at work after taking a few days off last week so I am really excited to get back into my routine. I’m feeling productive which is good because I usually don’t feel good on Monday’s! At work, I had some catching up to do from the previous week so it was pretty busy for me but I definitely welcomed it. Plus, tons of people are off for the holiday today, so commuting was super easy and the office was really quiet. I have a ton of blog content to work on this week, some video content I want to experiment with, and just trying to get back into my regular schedule. Tonight we’re also going out to dinner for my birthday so I can’t wait to get some chicken parm in my belly!

Tuesday (My 25th Birthday)

Tuesday was an insanely busy day that I felt like I had no time to even think! There was so much to do at work, that I barely had time to breathe and definitely didn’t get to check my phone very much, which was a bit frustrating for me because I missed a ton of birthday messages. As far as birthday things go, it truly did not feel like my birthday. It was a regular day in the life, except I got a ton more text messages than usual. Other than that, I didn’t really do anything special! I just watched some TV with Andrew and went to bed too late. This birthday was a good one in the sense that I didn’t feel so stressed about growing up. I am in a place where I feel really good about where I am and how far I’ve come. I have a ton of things I am working toward and things that frustrate me everyday, but I know that I’m on the right path to get where I want to go finally.

Wednesday

Today was definitely better than yesterday in the sense that I felt calmer and not so overwhelmed. I just had a good outlook on today and I was really excited for it. I felt productive and like I could really get a lot done today. I also feel like I’m getting a bad cold which is annoying because I was doing SO well not getting sick this year. I’m hoping it’s not due to stress and I’ll get over it soon. I guess we’ll have to stay tuned for that. I’m also trying so hard to watch the Bachelor this season, but I started a week late and I was so behind so I finally caught up tonight and the drama is NUTS. I thought it was going to be really slow after the first 2 episodes, but the third one really heated things up so I’m excited to see what happens next.

Sweater: Target / Jeans: American Eagle / Shoes: Steve Madden (similar)

Thursday

Today is such a rough one for me because I am fighting a nasty head cold. My nose is so stuffy and it feels like a million pounds and I’m so foggy, but I’m otherwise fine! I slept like a baby last night because I wasn’t feeling good and it still didn’t feel like enough. I’m hoping this little virus goes away soon though, because I’m traveling for work in about 2 weeks and I don’t want it to get even worse than it is! Other than my cold, things are slower today which is nice considering I don’t really have the mental capacity to do much anyway. I’m about ready for the weekend and hoping to rest up and relax since it was so busy last week. I’m trying my best to get back into a normal routine but it feels so difficult this month! Hopefully after this weekend, but we’ll see next week!

Sweater: & Other Stories / Leggings: Target / Shoes: Sam Edelman

Friday

First thing is that I’m going to start by apologizing for my outfit today. I truly could not bring myself to put on something more interesting than this. This cold has got me feeling so tired and stuffy that I can’t think about getting on a cute outfit. So for that, I am sorry! I had a nice and easy breezy day at work which was exactly what I needed because I just don’t have the brain power to think with this cold. I’m looking forward to snuggling up tonight with a giant blanket, a cup of hot lemon water and probably a movie since I caught up on the Bachelor already. The weekend could not have come soon enough and I am ready to relax, kick this cold to the curb, and celebrate my anniversary with my sweet man!

Four Ways to Wear Color in the Winter

If you’ve followed along with me on here for a while, you’ll know that I am a huge fan of wearing color, color-blocking, and monochromatic looks. I try to wear the same color palette often because I think it’s a bold way to style some of your favorite pieces. Winter is not typically associated with bright colors, but on recent runways, color is everywhere. I personally love bright jewel tones as well as the light and airy pastels colors that are coming for the spring. I think both are interesting to style for the winter, but they work surprisingly well. So today, I thought I’d try my hand at styling some colorful outfits. Let me know how you think I did in the comments! I am also linking as many items as possible here so you can try them out yourself!

Outfit #1

You all know pink is my favorite color to style so it wouldn’t be a blog post about color without at least one pink outfit. I found these super stylish pink corduroy pants at Target a few weeks ago and fell in love. Considering the bright color, they are extremely versatile because of the shape. I found this dusty pink Something Navy sweater on sale at Nordstrom (similar) and thought it would be perfect to pair with these bright pants. I also love to pair pink with colors like purple and red so that’s exactly what I did here. I got these Charles by Charles David purple suede heels (similar) at Nordstrom about a year ago and love them so much. I thought they were a perfect piece to pair with this outfit.

Sweater: Something Navy / Pants: Target / Shoes: Charles by Charles David

Outfit #2

I am recently trying to add some blue pieces to my wardrobe because as much as I love navy blue, it was the only form of blue I had in my closet other than denim. I find blue to be a really beautiful color lately. It was something I originally never really thought would work well on my skin tone, but I think it’s got so many versatile tones that it can work well for anyone! I found this really pretty muted blue cardigan at Target and knew I had to have it (especially at it’s $12.99 price tag at the time). It has since returned to full price, but it’s such a good piece that it’s worth the extra $12. These white slouchy jeans from Zara were also added to my cart during Zara’s sale a few weeks ago and have since sold out but I’m featuring them because it’s a style that they bring back often! Adding brown accessories keeps the colors from being overwhelming and a little bit more grounded so I added this belt from Urban Outfitters and my favorite loafers from Target.

Cardigan & Shoes: Target / Pants: Zara / Belt: Urban Outfitters

Outfit #3

One color combo that I’ve been really into, but never quite executed was wearing green and navy blue. They are pretty close together on the color wheel so they can be hard to style together, but I think when you find the right shades, they can look really beautiful. I found this bright kelly green turtleneck (similar) from Something Navy last year and thought it was such a pretty color. Now I see similar colors everywhere and have truly fallen for the color green. I think when paired with plain washed black straight leg jeans and some classic navy suede heels (similar), it’s a really easy look for a date night or even work depending on your dress code. I can’t wait to try styling these colors together more often!

Sweater: Something Navy / Jeans: Topshop / Shoes: Steve Madden

Outfit #4

I have recently been really into quarter/half zip sweaters and I saw this pretty lilac one at American Eagle and knew I had to have it. The very first time I saw it, it was actually sold out in just about every size! But I waited patiently and checked back a few weeks later and to my shock, it was restocked with full sizes so I knew right away it was a sign to order it. I’m loving these zip up style sweaters because they are a fun take on a regular pullover sweater. A really long time ago I saw a blogger on Instagram @walkinwonderland share a photo of her wearing a pretty lavender sweatshirt with light wash jeans and brown tall boots and thought it was an interesting color palette to wear so I decided to recreate it here. I’m wearing some light wash distressed mom jeans from Abercrombie and my Sam Edelman Lindsey boots to complete the look.

Sweater: American Eagle / Jeans: Abercrombie / Shoes: Sam Edelman

What I Wore This Week: 1/13/20 – 1/17/20

This week is a bit hectic, but should end up being okay I think. First thing is that I cannot believe we are half way through January already. Remember last year how January felt like it was 2 months long? This year is the exact opposite it looks like! Keep on reading to see what I did this week, what I wore and how I was feeling about all of it. I’ll be linking as many items as possible for you to shop also! Remember that I use affiliate links, so the retailer may pay me a commission for any purchases made via the links below at no additional cost to you! Also make sure to follow me on Instagram to see all of my outfits and updates in real time on my stores @karenmauritzenn.

Monday

This was the first day back after a crazy weekend. It was sort of a strange day if we’re honest but over time it ended up being okay. At work, I’m about 3 weeks out from our next event so things are ramping up and it’s very busy there. I’m also working on some other things in my personal life that I will share a bit later on and some more content for this blog. I shot a ton of content over the weekend so I had lots of editing to do! I also decided to start watching The Bachelor this week from the first episode, so I’m behind but I promise I’ll catch up! I’ve never seen it before and it’s so cringey but I have a feeling I’ll get addicted! I also got this sweater last week from Mango (on sale) and I am in love with the color! It’s so pretty and I really felt like I needed something blue in my closet. These exact items or something similar will all be linked in the caption!

Sweater: Mango / Jeans: Abercrombie (similar) / Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Tuesday

Today is just as hectic as yesterday was! I am out of the office the rest of this week so I have quite a few things I need to get done before I leave. Today is the kind of day where I feel really focused because I know that I don’t have the time to relax and hangout. I try my best to just keep my head down and focus on my projects until they are completed, but that doesn’t always work out! Some other things I need to get done today are a few blogs for the next few weeks (the ones I shot over the weekend) and start prepping for the ones in February (so crazy). I also am celebrating my birthday this coming weekend (which has already past as you are reading this) so I need to finalize that also. It’s busy but always worth it because I’m passionate about it! For my outfit, I got this blazer last week also and I felt like I really should wear it and look nice one day so today is the day. It’s from Mango and was on sale!

Blazer: Mango / Shirt: Target / Jeans: Topshop / Shoes: Louise et Cie

Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday

So the rest of the week, I took a bit of a break because I had some other things going on but I promise on Monday we’ll be back to regularly scheduled programming. Thanks for your patience!

Casual Outfits For When You Don’t Know What To Wear

I am the kind of person who constantly has no idea what to wear. It’s not often that I feel really inspired by my closet and it can be really frustrating for me to try and figure out something to wear ahead of time. Usually if I’m lacking inspiration, I look to my saved photos from Instagram and try to curate an outfit based on the things I saved. The issue however, is that 90% of the time, I don’t have anything similar to what the pretty Influencers are wearing in their photos. So today I wanted to share some outfit inspiration using items that you probably have in your closet already, inspired by my saved Instagram photos. I hate feeling stressed about my outfits, so I’m hoping this will help any of you who are feeling the same way!

Outfit #1

I saw this photo on Instagram and thought it was such a cute outfit that would be easy to put together because at this point, I feel like most people own these pieces or they are available at just about every retailer. I got this beige turtleneck a few years ago and I don’t even wear it very often, but it’s the kind of piece that you should have around because you never know when you’ll want to wear it. I paired it with these black jeans that are old so also naturally worn in which I love and these cute tan boots. It’s neutral and simple which makes it a great outfit to wear when you can’t really figure out what to wear.

Coat: Something Navy (similar) / Sweater: H&M / Jeans: American Eagle / Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Outfit #2

I love this cream sweater and I wear the heck out of it. I got my inspiration from Danielle Bernstein on Instagram, because as I’ve mentioned a bunch of times, I love her style. She wore a cable knit sweater in her photo, which I think looks better because of the texture it adds, but I think any cream color sweater will be sufficient. I love pairing black with tan so I threw on the same black jeans from the previous outfit and my tan suede Jeffrey Campbell Cromwell boots. I’ve been really into these boots lately which is so strange because it took me two whole years to even start wearing them. She has on a really cool jacket in her photo that I do not have, but I think a teddy coat would look great too!

Sweater: Something Navy (similar) / Jeans: American Eagle / Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Outfit #3

I also have told you that I’m a huge fan of Arielle Charnas because she has classic style but she definitely loves to play with texture, color, and crazy details. I saw this outfit posted on Something Navy’s Instagram and knew it was such a good outfit for when you don’t know what to wear. Most people do have at least one cardigan in their closet and probably a long cardigan at that. The rest of the outfit is a simple pair of jeans and t-shirt or tank top. I personally did not have a pair of black leather knee high boots until I recently purchased a pair from Sam Edelman but I did have a slightly shorter pair that I think would look just as cute from Something Navy. These boots are so popular right now though, so they shouldn’t be too hard to find!

Cardigan: Urban Outfitters (similar) / Top: Old Navy / Jeans: Abercrombie (similar) / Shoes: Something Navy (similar)

Outfit #4

One of my favorite things to style recently have been sweatshirts! Either plain or graphic, it doesn’t matter. I think they are a great piece to make an outfit comfy and casual, even if you happen to be wearing heels. I got my inspiration from Ashley Brooke on Instagram, whose style I have been a fan of kind of on and off over the last few years. But I saw her style a plain black sweater/sweatshirt with some distressed, washed black jeans with brown boots and I thought it was so cute. An all black outfit is such an easy go-to look, so of course I had to include one!

Coat: Something Navy (similar) / Top: Zara (similar) / Jeans: Topshop / Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Outfit Of The Day: Styling Winter Whites

I’ve seen a ton of people styling winter whites recently, which I personally love, so I thought I would give it a try on my own. I think white is such a pretty color to wear in the winter, especially if you live or go somewhere nice and snowy. It hasn’t been snowy here where I live, but that doesn’t mean I can’t show off my winter whites outfit. Keep on reading to see what I put together!

A few weeks ago I saw someone wearing a really cute half zip sweater on Instagram and I thought, “That’s such a cool sweater!” So I recently decided to go hunting for one and couldn’t really find ones I liked or they were all sold out until I took a peek at Abercrombie and found exactly what I was looking for! It was a new arrival too so there was plenty in stock and it came in a few different colors. I got the cream color, but there’s also a taupey pink and one with a chevron pattern which is pretty. My sweater is linked here!

I also saw the jeans that they styled the sweater with on the model and really liked them so I went searching for those as well. They were on sale and I have been looking for some new white jeans. I was considering a $200 pair from Re/Done so thank goodness I found these for $44! All my old ones don’t fit very well or they have rips in the knee so I can’t really wear them right now in the winter. I also wanted a pair that was more of a straight leg fit. I like these because they have the straight leg but the hem is also cuffed up really long which is kind of a cool detail to add! The jeans are linked here!

Lastly, I was working on another blog post and had to link my Jeffrey Campbell Cromwell booties and I saw that they had them in a pretty white leather snakeprint. I have had buying white ankle boots on my mind for a while, but it wasn’t a priority so I had kind of put it off. Once I saw these, it was like a light switch went off and I knew these were the boots I was looking for! I recently decided that I really like these Jeffrey Campbell boots so they were really the perfect choice to go with this outfit. My boots are linked here and here’s a link to a similar coat on sale for less than $80.

In closing, the look is super casual. Great to go out for coffee or run errands if you want to look a little bit nicer or even a lunch date with your friends or partner! I don’t think anyone even follows the no white after Labor Day rule anymore anyway, but I’m here to tell you, that you shouldn’t! White is definitely one of the best colors to wear in the winter so just go for it!
