Things I Loved This Month: December 2019

December has proven to be another very busy and expensive month. I spent more than I usually do on Christmas presents this year (it’s usually none cause I have a thing about presents), as well as lots of dinners and spending time with friends and family. Lots of work also, of course in preparation for the upcoming end of year festivities as well as planning for 2020. Lots of good things are on the way!

1. All of YOU!

Just a few days before Christmas I reached 200 blog followers which was one of my goals for 2019. It was one, I honestly wasn’t sure if I was going to reach so I am so proud and surprised that I did. I truly could not have done it without all my readers and the people who support me every day. I hope to grow even more in 2020 and I’m excited to share the rest of this journey with you all.

2. Caseapp

Last week, I shared my experience working with Caseapp and creating a custom phone case. It was a lot of fun and I’m so happy with how they turned out! It was such an easy process to design my own, but they also have tons of cute cases to choose from which made my selection process more fun. I was excited that they also offered a discount code for my followers for 20% off your purchase until January 11, 2020. The code is KARENMAURITZENN20 and can be used at www.caseapp.com!

3. Danielle Bernstein @weworewhat

Danielle Bernstein has been a huge inspiration to me this month for a few reasons. Obviously, she has insanely good style. She’s classic with such a funky twist. She wears clever pieces and she is so good at accessorizing (something I’m working on for 2020). But on top of that, she is also in her late 20’s and has built quite a few successful startup businesses. She’s got a clothing line, a tech business, is releasing a book and has major collaborations under her belt. THIS GIRL KNOWS HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS. I am truly inspired by her business savvy and she is a model of who I’d like to be when I grow up.

4. Not Shopping

This month was interesting for me because I actually took a break from doing any personal shopping and focused strictly on gifts for family. I’m not saying I’ve converted into a person who enjoys giving gifts, but I am saying that this is one of the first times where I actually enjoyed NOT shopping for myself. Maybe it was the crazy holiday season contributing to it, but it was refreshing not feeling like I needed to buy anything or scrambling around trying to find the best sales. I’m at a place where I’m happy with what I have and looking forward to transitioning into an even more classic “forever” wardrobe, but I don’t feel any urge to purchase. I find myself looking around putting things in my virtual cart and letting them sit there for weeks because I just don’t feel like I need to buy them. It’s amazing to feel this way when it’s something I struggled with for a very long time!

5. Taking Photos

I know this one seems silly to you, but I really struggle to enjoy taking photos. It’s probably the outfit changes, and having to put makeup on and recruiting friends and family for help that makes it something I struggle to enjoy but it’s true. I’m the blogger that hates taking photos. However, this month I felt more creative than ever and I was excited to really get my ideas out in digital to share with you. I’m looking forward to trying out new forms of media, specifically video in 2020 so it’s about time that I finally started enjoying taking photos! It can really be fun when you love what you do (and with lots of practice).

My Everyday Winter Makeup Look

Now I’m not saying that I wear make up every day because the truth is, I almost never wear makeup Monday through Friday. However, I wanted to share the makeup look that I wear on the weekends during the day if I want to look put together. It could very easily be an everyday makeup look because it’s not too heavy or over the top, it’s really light and casual. If you want to see the makeup look I wear on a regular day, then keep reading!

To start, I rediscovered my Smashbox Photo Finish Radiance Primer for a glowy look. I love how it made my skin look! Next I use my Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless Foundation in 322 Warm Beige for foundation and My Too Faced Born This Way Concealer under my eyes in the shade Natural Beige. I like to use my hands to apply my foundation and concealer recently, so that I use less product and I feel like it gives me a really smooth finish. To set everything I use my Laura Mercier Translucent powder, my absolute favorite setting powder and the only one I’ll use!

For my bronzer, I always use the Too Faced Dark Chocolate Soleil bronzer, not so much to contour, but to just warm up my face, especially in the winter. For blush, I really love using the color Songbird from Becca lately. It’s such a pretty flush of color on the cheeks. I don’t really use highlighter anymore, especially not for a day time look so we’re skipping that this time!

For my eyebrows, I always use my Anastasia Brow Definer in Ebony and set them with a clear mascara. I like this to fill my brows in better than a thin pencil because I already have full brows, so they don’t need to be filled in very precisely.

On my eyelids, I used my Morphe 35G palette again! I am really loving this palette. You can do so much with it and I think as far as eyeshadow palettes go, it’s one of my best purchases. I used the color Sandy all over as my base, the color Deserted on my lid and then Toasted on the outer third. I used the same brush that had the color Sandy on it to go back in and blend everything in together to make it really smooth. On my inner corner to brighten it up, I used a pretty shimmery color called Glaze. Finally, I finished off my eyes with my Diorshow Lash Primer and Volume Mascara then my L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara. I sprayed my face with the Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray, which is my tried and true favorite. On my lips, I used my all time favorite lipstick by Urban Decay in the color 1993. The prettiest, retro brown color on the market in my opinion.

Three Holiday Makeup Looks 2019

I recently purchased a new Morphe palette to try out and decided to use it for my holiday make up looks. I got the Morphe 35G Bronze Goals Palette from Ulta Beauty for just $25! The colors initially are really beautiful and have a good mix of shimmers and matte colors. I think this palette is perfect for holiday looks, for summer looks, really for any time of year! Keep on reading to see how I used it to create 3 holiday make up looks!

To start, my base is the same for all three looks. I used a combination of my Becca Matte Primer and the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer. For foundation, I used the Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless Foundation (which I am obsessed with and will never use a high end foundation ever again) in the shade 322 Warm Beige. For concealer, I used the Too Faced Born This Way Concealer in Natural Beige and contoured with the Anastasia Cream Contour Palette in Medium. I set everything with my Laura Mercier Translucent Powder which is my godsend and my favorite powder of all time. For bronzer, I used my favorite Too Faced Dark Chocolate Soleil Bronzer and for blush I went in with the Becca Blush in Wild Honey. My brows of course are using the Anastasia Brow Definer in Ebony and they are set with a clear mascara from Maybelline. Every look will be finished with my Diorshow Lash Primer and Volume Mascara and my L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara.

Look 1:

For the first look, I wanted to do something a bit more dark and sultry. This one is great if you have a more formal evening party. For my base, I used the color Sandy in my Morphe palette. It’s a warmish light brown and I washed it all over my eye lid and into my crease. For my crease, I used a slightly darker brown called Nekked. I also used a pretty shimmery dark brown on my lid and along my lower lashline called Tan-Talize. For my lip color, I used my Smashbox Liquid Lipstick in Stepping Out.

Look 2:

For my second look, I decided to do a look that is right in the middle, not too light and not too dark. For this one I also used the color Sandy as my base, but in my crease I used a warm reddish brown called Record Temps. I wanted a lot of shimmer, so I used a bright glittery gold color called Rays on my lids. For my lips, I used my new Colourpop Lippie Stix in Ziggie, which is the pretty dark orange color.

Look 3:

For the last look, I wanted it to be light and pretty. This is a look that would be great for day time parties if you switch out the lip color or great for night time as is. I used Sandy for the base again, and Nekked in the crease. For my lids, I used a shimmery pink-champagne color called Paradise. Lastly, for my lip color I used another Colourpop Lippie Stix in Thousand Percent which is a really rich cherry chocolate color.

Things I’m Loving This Month: November 2019

November honestly flew by and I can’t believe I am writing this monthly favorite post again! I feel like I was really thriving this month and enjoying being a little bit busy again. I don’t have a ton of favorites (which I think I say literally every month), but the ones I do have are really good. Keep on reading to see some of my favorites for November 2019.

Baublebar

I have talked about Baublebar a million times! They are my favorite shop to buy jewelry from, specifically festive and gaudy jewelry. I am the kind of girl that either wears no jewelry or is dripping in diamonds (not really but you know what I mean). I like Baublebar because they allow me to do both. I have some really beautifully made simple gold hoops from here and a pretty gold cuban link chain bracelet that I wear almost daily, but I also have beautiful giant heart earrings and rainbow earrings from here to. This is not even an ad, I just genuinely love their pieces!

Winc Wines

Earlier this month I did an ad for Winc and shared my latest box of wines I got in. I really was so happy with the wines I got from them. I finished 3/4 bottles and I was so happy to drink them. They were perfect for relaxing on a Friday night with some pizza and a terrible Netflix Christmas movie. You can use this link to get $22 off and complimentary shipping on your order which comes out to 4 bottles of wine for $39. This one IS an ad, but again, I really love their wines!

Headbands

I have showed you guys a ton of headbands this week and I can’t stop, won’t stop on that. I think they are probably the easiest way to dress up your outfit without having to do too much (same goes for earrings). I got a ton from Amazon and Baublebar recently and I am wearing them non-stop! I have a bunch linked in my Favorite Fall Accessories post that I did last week.

What I Wore This Week Blogs

I don’t know about you, but I am really enjoying sharing my weekly outfit recaps with you. It’s a nice way for me to look back on what I wore, how I was feeling and what was going on in my head that week. Plus it’s nice to have all my outfits from the week together in one place. Here is the link to some of my most recent outfit posts, here and here.

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate

I think this has been in my last 2 monthly favorites, but I have to say I really really am loving this. After using it for a few weeks, I am really seeing a difference in the overall look of my skin! It is softer, smoother and my acne scarring is not as prominent lately. I also feel like I have to exfoliate less often now (which is also partially due to my 10% lactic acid from The Ordinary). I think my skin in general is more glowy and I’m also feeling less oily throughout the day! I highly recommend this! Pricey but worth every penny.

Things I Loved This Month: October 2019

October has been sort of a funky month for me, so I don’t really have a lot of favorites if we’re honest. I can say that this month went by really fast and had so many ups and downs that I’m very glad it’s finally over. Here are just a few of my new favorite things for this month!

1. Corduroy Mom Jeans

Last spring, I found white corduroy mom jeans from Topshop that I fell in love with. I wore them a ton because they are so nice and cozy, very comfortable and they go well with tons of outfits. This year, I found the same pair and decided I should get them in brown and also black! They are some of the best corduroy mom jeans I’ve found and I had to talk myself out of getting the pink also!

2. Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate

I’ve mentioned this product in a few blog posts (My Skin Care Routine and my Sephora Haul) and I’ve really grown to love this product. I love the way my skin looks in the morning after I’ve used it and I think the overall health of my skin is much better because of it! It’s so light and not sticky. I am definitely going to repurchase this since I’m just about finished with my sample!

3. Citrus Defender @ Starbucks

I was feeling really sick earlier this month and was sort of unsure what to do about it. I saw that the Citrus Defender tea at Starbucks was a good alternative to the Medicine Ball tea and decided to try it. Lucky for me it’s packed out with vitamin C because it’s made with citrus tea and lemonade and it’s absolutely delicious. I’m not saying it cured me, but I was feeling 100% again within 2 days…just saying!

4. Everything Brown

Seriously, I love everything brown. I don’t know how many times I have to say it. I have about 4 brown sweaters now, a pair of corduroy pants, I’m on the hunt for chocolate brown loafers, I have a brown satin body suit, I have issues. Brown is my color for this season, and next, and probably the rest of my life. Highly recommend you try this out in a monochromatic look or in satin-y materials because it just is really beautiful!

5. Similarly, Everything Green

This month I also bought the most beautiful green shoes and I want to cry every time I look at them. They are so cute and comfortable and exactly what my closet needed. I also recently acquired a few green sweaters and found a gorgeous green plaid coat that I plan on buying soon. Not sure what is going on but these colors are making me so excited for fall and winter!

6. Louise et Cie Kota Heels

I’ve shared these shoes a few times on my instagram and they are just the best. A beautiful, classic heel with a super comfortable heel height that will last you for years to come. They are from Nordstrom and I bought them in white, black, and navy and I can’t get over them. A great shoe for day to night and just about any occasion.

Sephora Beauty Haul and Review

About 2 weeks ago I shared my updated Fall Skincare Routine on here and I shared a ton of new products. Now that I’ve actually used the products for a few weeks, I wanted to share my honest review of them with you too. I hadn’t changed my skincare routine in about a year, so this was definitely interesting to me to have to figure out what to try. I try to keep my skincare routine simple, because I feel that simple usually gets you the best results. Keep on reading to see how I like the new products I got!

Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Honey Moisture Deep Conditioning Mask

This is a limited edition version of the original Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Mask that is made with honey which is a super moisturizing ingredient for your hair. It’s also not skincare, but it’s the only one I have that’s not, so I figured I should share first. It comes in a cute little teddy bear bottle, which I like better than the original tub version because it’s just easier to squeeze the product out and see how much you’re using. I like the smell sort of, it’s a little too sweet for me but it’s still nice. It smells sort of like synthetic/plastic sugar cookie so do with that what you will. The scent lasts after you get out of the shower and smells much better once your hair is dry. As far as moisture goes, I do find it more moisturizing than the original which is the point so it’s definitely worth looking into!

Summer Fridays CC Me Vitamin C Serum

I love to use a Vitamin C serum for brightening and I had used the Ole Henriksen Truth Serum for a year and just felt like I needed a change. I had never used any Summer Fridays products before, but had always heard good things about the brand. I’ve also been a huge fan of Marianna Hewitt for a few years so when I saw this product, I figured why not? The texture is very light and reminds me of the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer. It’s got like a silicon texture once it’s applied on your face, which I actually like a lot. The texture feels really light and it’s got a very light scent. I don’t see a huge difference in brightness, but it’s only been 2 weeks so I wouldn’t mind giving this a little bit longer to work it’s magic.

Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Retinol Eye Sleeping Mask

I love this eye mask so far! I think it’s done a great job of brightening and depuffing my eyes. With my new work schedule and commuting an hour and a half every day (versus my previous 5 minute commute), I’m definitely lacking sleep so this helps me pretend like I’m not. The texture is really heavy and creamy which personally, I love for night time. I like to use it in the morning too, because it works very quickly to help depuff. There’s really not a distinctive scent which is nice since it’s an eye cream and sometimes fragrance can be irritating. I would definitely recommend this product if you’re on the market for a new eye cream.

THE ORDINARY Lactic Acid 10% + HA

This is a product that I’ve used for the last year, but only in the 5% version. Sephora doesn’t sell that one and frankly, I didn’t want to put in a separate order for a $6 product so I just stepped it up to the 10% version. It’s definitely stronger, so I don’t recommend using it if you have sensitive skin. I like this because my skin really feels smooth, soft and brighter after using this product. I use it once or twice a week depending on what my skin has been doing that week. I love this product and I like that there’s the option to get the less strong version also! Plus the price is nice too!

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate

This is a product that I got as a sample with my order and I really like it actually. It keeps my skin really soft and healthy looking. It’s an oil but it’s really light and so far I would definitely consider buying the full size version. It’s a little pricey for a serum, but I think it does a good job at repairing my skin so I would probably purchase when I run out of this sample size!

Laneige Water Sleeping Mask

This is another product that I got as a sample and I am definitely going to buy a full size of this. I love to use a super moisturizing heavy moisturizer/cream at night and this is not that. It’s super moisturizing, but not heavy at all. It feels really light, almost cooling, but it is so moisturizing. If you have dry skin, I would highly recommend this product but it’s also great for oily skin too. It’s so good and I think I’m going to look into a few more Laneige products.

My Updated Fall Skincare Routine

It’s been about a year since I last shared my skincare routine, so I thought I would jump on here and share some new products I’ve incorporated into my skincare routine! I will do a full review of these products in a few weeks once I have a better idea of the effects they’ve had on my skin, but for now, here’s what I changed. My old skincare routine is linked here for reference!

Cleanser + Toners

For my cleanser, nothing has changed here and honestly nothing ever will. I will always always use my Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash. It’s been a life saver for me and the only cleanser that I feel really gets my skin clean without too much drying. I have acne prone skin, so this really helps when I get breakouts to get rid of them quickly!

For toners, right now, I’m using the Neutrogena Pore Refining Toner in the morning after I shower to make sure my pores are closed up nice and tight. I work in NYC, so there’s tons of air pollution, smog, dirt, etc EVERYWHERE so I find this necessary to keep my skin looking oil free and clean throughout the day. At night, I use the Clear Pore Oil-Eliminating Toner from Neutrogena to help dry up any breakouts and deep clean my skin from all the gross stuff that got on it during the day. Once or twice a week, I’ll use the Glycolic Acid Solution Toner by The Ordinary to exfoliate my skin after scrubbing with a brush to get smooth and fresh skin. I usually use this on a Thursday or Friday to prepare for the weekend and again on Sunday night to prepare for the coming week!

Serums, Acids, Oils

If I used my glycolic acid toner, then I’ll usually use my Lactic Acid 10% + HA from The Ordinary on top to get an even deeper chemical exfoliation. I don’t have sensitive skin, so using both products doesn’t have a major effect but if you have sensitive skin, I would recommend using one or the other because they can be very harsh.

If I used my Pore Refining Toner in the morning, I’ll then go in with my Summer Fridays CC Me Vitamin C Serum to help with brightening my skin and lightening up some of my acne scars. I like this product so far, it’s very light and leaves a smooth finish on my skin.

If I used my acne toner at night, I’ll use my Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concertrate oil sample first to help with repairing my skin while I sleep. Not sure if I like this yet so we’ll see when I finish the sample! After that, because I have acne scarring and a real scar on my forehead from falling on the escalator a few months ago, I also use Bio Oil on my cheeks and my forehead. I honestly feel like this has helped a ton for my acne scarring, but I can only use it at night because it makes my skin REALLY oily. After that I’ll use some rosehip oil on my skin. This is supposed to be good for acne, as well as lightening up scarring and adding moisture. At night is when I go crazy with oils because night time is when your skin gets the chance to recover from the day and replenish all the moisture it’s missing.

Moisturizer + Eye Cream

I recently rediscovered Ponds moisturizers. I used to use it in college, because it was great for keeping my skin moisturized during the brutal Buffalo winters. I saw a new one in Target the other day, so I decided to try it out! It’s the Ponds Rejuveness Moisturizer, with the red cap which is good for anti-aging because it’s never too early. So far, I like it a lot and my skin feels moisturized, maybe a little oily, but good. For eye cream, I used to use the Origins GinZing brightening eye cream, but it just never gave me the brightening and depuffing that I was looking for. I recently switched to the Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Retinol Eye Sleeping Mask which I saw another blogger using, so I was influenced and purchased it. I like how creamy and thick this is and so far, I do think it helps with depuffing and brightening but definitely want to keep using it for a few more weeks to see how effective it is. So far so good!

I hope you liked this one and let me know if you decide to try any of these products out!
