Four Cute and Casual Winter Outfit Ideas

I wanted to share a few really casual outfits on here because usually, well, I don’t. I tend to share more dressed up looks or looks for special occasions or something along those lines and frankly, no one really looks like that day to day. So, I figured I’d do a post of some casual-but-still-put-together outfits. I definitely want to make more of an effort to share outfits that can be worn day to day because it’s just the most realistic. I hope you enjoy these! I’ll link as many items or similar items as I can!

Outfit #1

This first look is the most casual of all the looks and something I would probably wear out to run errands (if I didn’t want to wear sweatpants which is almost never). Instead of sweatpants and a sweatshirt, I opted for a sweatshirt and JEANS instead! I got this cozy sweatshirt while hanging around in Montauk over the summer and it’s a staple for me when I want to be comfy. To look more put together, I figured light wash jeans (similar) and a pair of chunky sneakers was the best option. As always, gold hoops are there to help dress things up too!

Sweater: Montauk town store / Jeans: Topshop / Shoes: Fila / Coat: Something Navy

Outfit #2

There’s nothing quite like an all black outfit. I’m partial to a washed black when it comes to my denim because if it’s too black, I feel like my top has to match exactly otherwise my outfit looks strange. I wear these Abercrombie jeans all the time and just put on a plain black sweater from Urban Outfitters (similar). My Jeffrey Campbell boots are ones I have a love-hate relationship with. I want to get rid of them every year, but I never do because I ALWAYS end up wanting to wear them at one point and it just resets the cycle for me. But they are such a chic western style piece so they’ll be in style for quite a while.

Jacket: Forever 21 / Sweater: Urban Outfitters / Jeans: Abercrombie / Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell

Outfit #3

Another favorite look of mine is wearing cardigans as tops, which is super in style these days anyway. Paired with any pair of jeans and it’s a super easy, casual look but you still look like you intended to get dressed that morning. I love this little cardigan from American Eagle (similar), and got it in both colors because it’s the perfect length and the V-neck is not too deep. These are some of my favorite Jamie Jeans from Topshop, again in a washed black/gray color because it goes so well with just about everything! This one is the most dressy because it technically has a heel, but they are boots and a comfortable height so they are not NOT casual. These are similar boots from Steve Madden.

Coat & Shoes: Something Navy / Sweater: American Eagle / Jeans: Topshop

Outfit #4

This is another favorite of mine because you know I love to wear a bright pink. Instead of wearing this cardigan as a top, I wore it as a regular cardigan to add dimension to my outfit by layering it with a lace trim cami. Paired with some medium wash mom jeans, it’s a perfect casual outfit! I dressed it up a little bit more with these funky mules, but you can wear little booties or flats with this too and it will get you an even more casual look.

Cardigan: Something Navy / Top & Jeans: Abercrombie / Shoes: Sam Edelman

What I Wore This Week: 12/30/19 – 1/3/20

It’s another holiday week and I also have some days off from work this week which is really nice! I’m ready to relax at home, get a TON of blog work done and enjoy my time off. Being that I’m home this week, there’s not going to be too much getting dressed this week I gotta say, but I promise I did my best to put some kind of outfit together each day. Sometimes it’s nice to just be super casual and not care too much about how you look! I linked as many items as I could but a ton of this stuff is old and sold out. Please note that these are affiliate links so the retailer may pay me a commission for any purchases made via the links below at no additional cost to you!

Monday

I was home all day and it was really raining, but I had a few errands to run so I decided to get dressed for that stuff which was good. I really had a lot of work to do for the blog, but with the rainy weather, it makes it hard to do photos outside or inside. I took some time to edit photos I took over the weekend and rearranged my week to make sure I had time to take the other photos I needed to do. I had a few returns to make, tons of packages to open and lots of planning and writing for the next few weeks. I love Mondays where I can feel productive, get lots of work done and get off to a good start to the week and this was definitely one of those weeks!

Sweater: American Eagle / Leggings: Target / Shoes: UGG

Tuesday (New Year’s Eve)

I feel like I was rushing around like a crazy person all day today trying to make sure I got all my tasks done before getting ready to celebrate the new year. In the morning I got ready and shot some outfits for upcoming blogs (in the backyard because no one was available to assist), I went to the gym, ran to Target to pick up a few things, came home and ate lunch before getting ready to head to a NYE party. It was super busy, but I got everything done! Andrew and I spent the night at his sister’s apartment after hanging out with some friends, really good food, and our own homemade margaritas! It was so much fun and I’m so happy that this is how we rang in our New Year! Unfortunately, none of the clothing items were available because they are really old so there’s no links for those, but my shoes are on sale!

Top: Express / Jeans: Topshop / Shoes: Naturalizer

Wednesday (New Year’s Day)

I spent all day sort of doing nothing, sort of being busy on New Year’s Day. I started the morning with Andrew from the night before and we had a yummy breakfast and watched some TV. We watched a few episodes of Schitt’s Creek and Shark Tank, which we’re really into this past week! After that I met with my dad and spent about 2 hours with him before going to grab lunch at Corelife Eatery, my favorite “fast food” place. I got the yummiest steak salad and got the veggies my body was craving after 2 weeks of indulging and overeating. After that it was straight back to work on some blog stuff, editing photos, cleaning my room from all the boxes I got in recently and getting ready to head back to work tomorrow!

Thursday

Today was my first day back and work after being on vacation and having the holidays off and it was fairly busy! I feel like I got some good work done. I was exhausted this morning and kind of snapped out of it later in the day but it hit me again really hard on the train home. I try my best not to sleep on the train out of fear of missing my stop but today I just couldn’t help myself. Luckily, I did not miss my stop but I was definitely ready to get home and relax today. Thank goodness for a short week, right? As for my outfit today, I was super excited about this one! I got both my top and bottoms over the weekend and I’m obsessed with them. The pants are insanely comfortable and surprisingly flattering and the sweater is super comfy and much warmer than I expected. It was such a good outfit to start off my new year! My pants are sold out because they were part of Zara’s sale, but everything else is available.

Sweater: Abercrombie / Jeans: Zara / Shoes: Target

Friday

First week back is done! Thursday night I literally couldn’t sleep because I had so many new ideas running through my head for blog posts. I love to write fashion posts and I feel more motivated than ever to write those, but I also want to share some more thoughtful posts with you. I want this to be a place that you go for advice and to read something insightful, but also for fashion inspiration. I want to make sure I’m including those thoughtful posts often so that is one thing I am trying to incorporate into my content. Please feel free to leave a comment on some thoughtful posts you’d enjoy reading! If there’s any other blog posts you’d like to read, feel free to leave those below as well!

Things I Loved This Month: December 2019

December has proven to be another very busy and expensive month. I spent more than I usually do on Christmas presents this year (it’s usually none cause I have a thing about presents), as well as lots of dinners and spending time with friends and family. Lots of work also, of course in preparation for the upcoming end of year festivities as well as planning for 2020. Lots of good things are on the way!

1. All of YOU!

Just a few days before Christmas I reached 200 blog followers which was one of my goals for 2019. It was one, I honestly wasn’t sure if I was going to reach so I am so proud and surprised that I did. I truly could not have done it without all my readers and the people who support me every day. I hope to grow even more in 2020 and I’m excited to share the rest of this journey with you all.

2. Caseapp

Last week, I shared my experience working with Caseapp and creating a custom phone case. It was a lot of fun and I’m so happy with how they turned out! It was such an easy process to design my own, but they also have tons of cute cases to choose from which made my selection process more fun. I was excited that they also offered a discount code for my followers for 20% off your purchase until January 11, 2020. The code is KARENMAURITZENN20 and can be used at www.caseapp.com!

3. Danielle Bernstein @weworewhat

Danielle Bernstein has been a huge inspiration to me this month for a few reasons. Obviously, she has insanely good style. She’s classic with such a funky twist. She wears clever pieces and she is so good at accessorizing (something I’m working on for 2020). But on top of that, she is also in her late 20’s and has built quite a few successful startup businesses. She’s got a clothing line, a tech business, is releasing a book and has major collaborations under her belt. THIS GIRL KNOWS HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS. I am truly inspired by her business savvy and she is a model of who I’d like to be when I grow up.

4. Not Shopping

This month was interesting for me because I actually took a break from doing any personal shopping and focused strictly on gifts for family. I’m not saying I’ve converted into a person who enjoys giving gifts, but I am saying that this is one of the first times where I actually enjoyed NOT shopping for myself. Maybe it was the crazy holiday season contributing to it, but it was refreshing not feeling like I needed to buy anything or scrambling around trying to find the best sales. I’m at a place where I’m happy with what I have and looking forward to transitioning into an even more classic “forever” wardrobe, but I don’t feel any urge to purchase. I find myself looking around putting things in my virtual cart and letting them sit there for weeks because I just don’t feel like I need to buy them. It’s amazing to feel this way when it’s something I struggled with for a very long time!

5. Taking Photos

I know this one seems silly to you, but I really struggle to enjoy taking photos. It’s probably the outfit changes, and having to put makeup on and recruiting friends and family for help that makes it something I struggle to enjoy but it’s true. I’m the blogger that hates taking photos. However, this month I felt more creative than ever and I was excited to really get my ideas out in digital to share with you. I’m looking forward to trying out new forms of media, specifically video in 2020 so it’s about time that I finally started enjoying taking photos! It can really be fun when you love what you do (and with lots of practice).

Rediscovering My Purpose as a Blogger

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been sort of going back and forth about what I do in this blogging space, how I got here, why I started, etc. Lots of thoughts running through my head recently. In the year 2020, I have some big goals for my blog and myself and I feel really strongly that I can achieve them in the next year. I work really hard at what I do, and I’ve never felt so creative. But as we all know, the deeper we get into things, the more our reasoning for doing it changes.

I started my blog when I was 23 years old, one year out of college and struggling to “figure it out”. I was feeling unsatisfied and frustrated with my career choice, my relationships, my finances, and so many other things and it truly felt like there was no end in sight. I started this blog as a digital journal of what was going on in my life. I wanted to be able to look back and say “I remember when I wrote this, I had this going on” or “I had just finished going through this.” I was looking for a creative outlet for myself. I wanted a chance to do something I actually felt passionate about, but had denied myself for a very long time.

Now, I am (almost) 25 years old and a lot has changed. I’ve changed jobs, let go of relationships and started new ones, written over 150 blog posts, and so many other things. One thing I’m realizing though, is that my reason for writing this blog has changed. While I still love writing posts like this one to use to look back on and see where my head was when I wrote it, I’ve also realized that I’m passionate about more than just fashion. In fact, I want to write even more of these thought provoking, open and honest posts. I rediscovered that I love writing. I sometime feel pressured to do things a certain way to appeal to a larger audience. I’m extremely susceptible to the anxiety and comparison that comes with creating a presence online. I have a better understanding of who I am, but struggle to portray that online. I’m extremely proud of the work I’ve done on this blog. I have an extremely strong support system behind me that I didn’t have when I was 23. I know that I want more out of this and it’s something I am truly passionate about and will always be a part of who I am.

In 2020, I want to do my best to stay true to myself and who I am. I want to write about the topics that I enjoy! I want to create the kind of content that makes me happy. I feel like I have so much more to offer and 2020 is the year that I feel ready to find out what that is. I’m not exactly sure where this year will take me, but I’m excited to find out. As far as my plan goes, I will continue to share fashion content because I love it. I’m hoping to create more content and share a larger variety of topics, not just fashion. I want my readers to feel like they really know me and that I’m giving them something valuable when they read my posts. I want my readers to feel like I can be a friend. So that’s my focus for the coming year, just being true to myself, no pressure. I’m looking forward to a lot of good things this year.

What The Heck Happened in 2019: A Recap

2019 was quite the year. To be honest, I would call it my best year yet. So many wonderful things happened in 2019, that I feel really excited for 2020. I’m not really sure how it could get any better. Keep on reading for a summary of what the heck happened in 2019.

The Good

Some good things that happened this year include but are not limited to: dating Andrew (the best person in the whole world), getting a new job, finally saving up some money for the future, reaching 1,000+ Instagram followers (finally), fully committing to the growth of my blog, traveling to 3 countries and within the US, connecting with other bloggers online and IRL, landing not one, but two brand partnerships and SO much more. This truly was my best year so far. There’s no words for how thankful I am for everything that happened this year because it set me up for so much more to come next year.

The Bad

Even through all the fun and frills, it wasn’t a perfect year. Here are some of the bad things that happened in 2019: didn’t quite reach my goal of 200 blog followers by the end of the year (*edit: I reached this just a few days before Christmas!), I lost my job, I effed up my finances for a bit being unemployed (and before that if we’re honest), experienced burn out more times than I can count, stopped going to the gym, spent a ton of time comparing myself to other people and a ton of other things too.

What’s Next

I have some more thoughts on this coming in tomorrow’s bonus blog post, but I have big plans for 2020. One year goes by so fast, but there is so much that can be done in that amount of time. My main goals for next year are to really dive full force into my blog/Instagram and create things that I love. I want to move out on my own, make new friends, travel and explore a different part of myself as an adult in her mid-twenties. There’s so much room for growth and I have a lot of learning to do, but I feel really ready to take on some new things. I’m looking forward to making 2020 my best year yet.

What I Wore This Week: 12/22/19 – 12/28/19

Ahh yes another start to the week! It’s finally Christmas week, so I am really looking forward to it. I think it might be a slow work week, but I think it’ll be great to finally have some time off to relax, spend time at home and with family and get ready for a new year. What a week we have ahead of us! P.S. I’ve decided I’m going to start linking the exact items I’m wearing or something similar if it’s no longer available. Links will be available in the captions of the photo and please be aware that I use affiliate links, so the retailer may pay me a commission for any purchases made via these links at no additional cost to you! P.S. don’t forget to follow me on Instagram @karenmauritzenn to see these outfits in real time on my stories!

Sunday

After a busy weekend, I was ready to relax today but I had a ton of things to do honestly. I had put off shooting some photos for a very long time so it was really important that I got those done this weekend, otherwise I’d have no blog posts to share with you this week! After finishing up some photos and some last minute gift shopping, Andrew and I spent our Sunday relaxing at home watching our new favorite show, The Witcher on Netflix. It’s a pretty good show, but really confusing for someone who has never played the video game or read the books. Is anyone else watching it?

Coat: Something Navy (similar) / Sweater: Mango (similar) / Leggings: Target / Shoes: Fila

Monday

This Monday in particular is a great Monday because it’s the one right before Christmas meaning it’s the start of a short week! It’s also the day I finally hit my goal of gaining 200 blog followers. This was a goal I had originally set to meet by September 2019, so I’m a bit delayed but super proud that I made it by the end of the year. I honestly attribute this win to consistency as far as posting content regularly, engaging with my audience consistently and just pure passion. Particularly in the last few months, I’ve felt extremely passionate about what I do here on this medium. I have never felt so inspired and like I’ve found what I’m supposed to be doing. It’s more than just a creative outlet for me at this point and I am so happy to say that I’ve gotten here. I’m really looking forward to the coming year.

Tuesday (Christmas Eve)

One last work selfie before I’m off for one day. It’s Christmas Eve finally and I have to be honest I’m not feeling my best. The holidays at the end of the year tend to cause me a lot of stress and anxiety because I know that change is coming. It’s going to be a new year, a new decade with tons of possibilities open and I know that it’s exciting and I am excited for it, but it also makes me feel sick to my stomach. I’m not exactly sure what makes me nervous around this time, maybe being around family too long, or setting my expectations too high, or the fear of growing older that we all have. I’m not entirely sure, but it gets me every year. I’m trying my best to stay positive and enjoy these holidays for what they are and what they represent. I want to take advantage of the time with family, but it’s just hard. I think it’s okay to have those scared/nervous/anxious feelings as long as you acknowledge them and then work to move past them. There’s no sense in wasting the precious time you could have spent enjoying yourself by being miserable, but it doesn’t mean you have to force yourself to fake a smile. Being self-aware is something I work on constantly to get rid of my not-so-good habits but it’s the kind of thing that takes lots of time and patience. I just don’t want anyone to feel bad about feeling bad during the holidays, because it happens to more people than you think.

Sweater: American Eagle (similar) / Jeans: Topshop / Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell / Belt: Urban Outfitters

Wednesday (Christmas Day)

I woke up today feeling not my best again. I really don’t know what it is about the holidays that make me feel so down, but they do. I felt mostly like I just wanted to be alone so I laid in bed for an extra hour and a half this morning, snuggled up with my cat until I finally peeled myself out of bed and made some coffee. I was feeling really exhausted, like I hadn’t slept all week and just not quite ready to take on the day. Once I got ready for the day, I headed over to Andrew’s to spend the day with his family. Once I had been there for a little bit, I was starting to feel better and completely forgot how unhappy I felt when I woke up this morning. It was nice to be with Andrew and his family, to start new traditions with them and I’m happy that I pushed myself past my feelings to be there and experience my first Christmas with them. We ate lots of food and desserts and had some Moscow mules and wine and watched TV and just talked and relaxed and enjoyed our time. It was my favorite Christmas so far.

Sweater: American Eagle / Jeans: Topshop / Boots: Sam Edelman

Thursday

I woke up thankful for a short week this week. I’m back at work again today and looking forward to a (hopefully) easy day since a lot of people seem to still be off today. I woke up feeling really exhausted again, but much better than I did the last two days. I can really feel the weekend coming now and that’s giving me the biggest push to finish out the week strong. I’ve got a busy weekend, so I’m really looking forward to it!

Cardigan: Urban Outfitters (similar) / Top: Express / Jeans: Topshop / Shoes: Steve Madden (similar)

Friday

Finally Friday!!! I woke up so tired this morning, but I had a super relaxing commute because I took an earlier train and no one sat next to me which is unheard of in the morning on the LIRR. I got a delicious cup of coffee and got to work an hour early so I had time to relax, read the news and drink my coffee in peace. That is as good as a morning at work will get I think! As I mentioned already, I’m looking forward to this weekend because it’s very busy, but I also took off of work on Monday and Tuesday next week (which is technically today and tomorrow when you’re reading this!) so I’m excited to relax finally and by relax, I mean get a ton of blog work done. I am already pretty ahead on my posts, but I want to start planning into February at least so I can schedule shoots and plan out writing! I’m really looking forward to having the time during the week to get this prep work done because it’s really helpful to me. I also find it relaxing because it doesn’t feel like boring tedious work to me. I’ve got so many good things coming soon! On another note, I am super obsessed with my outfit! It’s been a little bit warm this week and it made me really excited to get to wear this cardigan that’s a little bit lighter than what I’d normally wear in December. It’s exciting for my creative outfit juices but probably bad for the environment…

Creating a Custom Phone Case with Caseapp

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was working on a new partnership and it’s time to finally announce it! I recently worked with Caseapp to create my very own custom phone case on their website www.caseapp.com and I love how it came out. They were also kind enough to offer a 20% discount code to my followers that can be used on their website. The code is KARENMAURITZENN20 and it can be used up until January 11, 2020. Thank you again to casepp for letting me create my own custom iPhone case!

The process to create the case was super easy. You just go online and select Custom at the top and select your type of phone or laptop and then you can start customizing! There’s tons of colors, fonts, and stickers to choose from to make it your own. I knew I wanted to make something with my initials on it and I wanted it to be pretty and simple. I found this sticker that said “baby”, so I decided to work with that and typed in the part that says “don’t call me”, added a little heart sticker and my initials and decided to make it this really pretty color. After that, I added it to my cart and checked out! Super simple process and shipping took about a week to be delivered.

They also have hundreds of pre-designed case options also with all kinds of themes. They have cute holiday ones, animals (which were my favorites), some really beautiful artistic pieces, funny ones and so much more. It was definitely hard to choose! I found this super cute panther queen case and it really spoke to me so I decided to pick that one up also.

Overall, using Caseapp’s design tools were super easy and the process to create it was so simple. I’m so excited to have worked with them and hope to work with them again when I get a new phone in the spring! They have an amazing Instagram that you can check out @caseapp and of course, their website www.caseapp.com. Don’t forget you can use my discount code KARENMAURITZENN20 to get 20% off your order from Caseapp until January 11, 2020!
